What to Expect at Mudgeeraba Hand Clinic

 

CONSULTATION

 

1. Do I need a referral to see Dr Kent?

Yes. A referral from your GP, physiotherapist, or another specialist is required for your Medicare rebate and provides helpful background information.

 

2. What happens during my first appointment?

Dr Kent will review your symptoms, examine your hand or wrist, assess any imaging, and discuss your diagnosis. Together, you will decide on a personalised treatment plan.

 

3. What should I bring to my consultation?

- Referral letter

- X-rays, scans, or previous operation notes

- Medication and medical history list

- Medicare card and private health insurance details

 

4. Will I receive a treatment plan at my first visit?

Most of the time, yes. Occasionally further imaging or tests are needed.

 

BEFORE SURGERY

 

5. How will I know what to do before surgery?

You will receive written instructions about fasting, admission time, and preparation.

 

6. What should I bring on the day of surgery?

- Admission paperwork and ID

- Medicare and health fund details

- Imaging

- Comfortable loose clothing

 

7. Is hand and wrist surgery usually day surgery?

Yes, most procedures are day surgery.

 

8. Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes. A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you overnight.

 

AFTER SURGERY

 

9. What can I expect after my operation?

You will receive written instructions on dressings, pain relief, and follow-up.

 

10. How do I manage swelling and discomfort?

Keep your hand elevated above heart level for the first few days.

 

11. When can I drive or return to work?

This depends on your procedure.

 

12. Will I need to see a hand therapist?

Often, yes.

 

13. What should I do if I have a problem after surgery?

If you notice increasing pain, redness, swelling, discharge, fever, or any concerning change:

- Contact Mudgeeraba Hand Clinic first during business hours.

- If the clinic is closed, or if symptoms are severe, present to your nearest Emergency Department.

14. How are fees determined?

Fees follow AMA guidelines.

 

15. Will there be out-of-pocket costs?

Gap fees will be discussed in advance.

 

16. Does the clinic accept WorkCover or DVA?

Yes.

 

17. How do I pay for my consultation?

Payment is required on the day.
