Specialist in Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery
MBBS, BSc (UQ), FRACS (Orth), FAOrthA

Dr Stephen Kent is a Gold Coast-based orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in hand, wrist and microsurgery. He is dedicated to restoring function and helping patients return to the activities that matter most through expert, personalised care.

Dr Kent grew up in Brisbane, where he completed his schooling and graduated with an OP1. He was awarded guaranteed entry into medicine at the University of Queensland following completion of a Bachelor of Science, and later completed his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at UQ.

He completed his orthopaedic training through the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), gaining broad clinical experience across both metropolitan and regional centres in Queensland. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and went on to complete two post-training fellowships in hand and upper limb surgery.

These fellowships—at Gold Coast University Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane—refined his skills in microsurgery, reconstructive techniques, minimally invasive procedures, and complex trauma. This subspecialty training consolidated his expertise in managing the full spectrum of hand and upper limb conditions.

Drawn to the complexity and precision of hand surgery, Dr Kent is particularly interested in how seemingly small injuries can have a significant impact on daily life. His microsurgical expertise includes tendon and nerve reconstruction, revascularisation, and soft tissue salvage. He works closely with specialist hand therapists, radiologists and anaesthetists to ensure patients receive coordinated, multidisciplinary care throughout their treatment.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Kent is committed to surgical education and mentoring. He has supported junior doctors and orthopaedic trainees throughout his career and served as President of the Queensland Orthopaedic Registrar Association (QORA), where he advocated for excellence in training, wellbeing and professional development across the state. He remains actively involved in training and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.

Dr Kent consults privately at the Mudgeeraba Hand Clinic, providing care to patients from across the Gold Coast, Northern New South Wales and surrounding regions. He takes time to understand each patient’s goals — whether that means returning to sport, work, or day-to-day activities — and tailors each treatment plan to support their recovery and long-term function.
